How to use a pace band
A pace band lists your cumulative target time at each mile or kilometer β not your pace, but what the race clock should read when you pass each marker. That's the useful version: you glance down at mile 14, compare the band to the clock, and instantly know whether you're up or down on goal, without doing mental arithmetic while oxygen-deprived.
To make one that survives a race:
- Generate your band and hit print (it prints two copies on plain paper).
- Cut along the border.
- Cover both sides with clear packing tape and trim. This takes a minute and makes it sweat- and rain-proof β untaped paper turns to pulp by halfway.
- Wrap it around your wrist and tape the ends, or tuck it under your watch strap.
Even splits or negative split?
Even splits are the simplest approach and work well for most runners: the same pace throughout, so the band's numbers step up evenly.
Negative split means running the second half slightly faster than the first β which is how most personal bests are actually run. The value isn't really the fast finish; it's the protection against going out too hard, which is the single most common way a race falls apart. This generator's negative split option makes your first half about 1% slower than average pace and your second half about 1% faster. That's deliberately modest: an aggressive negative split requires giving away more time early than most runners are willing to.
